Welcome to BMA Algebra. This class is a beginning algebra program designed for learners of all ages. It is designed to be used independently, but also lends itself to full classroom instruction.
Before getting started there are a couple of important reminders to teachers and students. First, it is very important that the students watch the entire Power Point® presentation before starting the homework assignment. There are practice problems given throughout the Power Point® presentation. The student needs to do all of these practice problems as part of the presentation. Students who shortcut this often find themselves lost or confused when it comes to doing the homework assignment. Speaking of the homework assignment, it is also important that the student does each problem on the assignment.* And finally, and not the least important, the student needs to ask for help when he/she does not understand a concept.
Grade program – There is no magic grade program or formula for BMA Algebra. You may already have a program that you are comfortable with, or you may have your own ideas about how grades should be kept. I have included a grade program that you can load on to your administrative computer and use to track student progress.
This grade program will automatically weight the assignments as 50% of the grade and the tests and quizzes as 50% of the grade. You’ll notice that at the bottom of the Excel® program, there are three worksheets: “Assignments,” “Tests and Quizzes,” and “Summary.” All of the assignments for each unit are already listed and will be totaled automatically as you enter scores. Likewise, all of the quizzes and tests are also already labeled and will be totaled automatically. The “Summary” worksheet will calculate the overall quarter grade automatically
Grade is based on:

Unit plan – This is the outline for each unit. It will outline which presentation the student should watch, what assignment goes along with the presentation, when the quizzes should be taken, and when the test should be completed. In short, the Unit Plan is the direction for completing the unit. There is a Unit Plan for each of the units. These can be easily printed out and given to the student as he/she begins the unit.
Presentations – For each lesson (except the unit review lessons and review lessons found in Units 6 and in Unit 7) there is a Power Point® presentation. The presentation number corresponds with the lesson number, so they should be easy for the student to locate. The presentations are designed so they can be completed by the student individually at a computer. In each lesson, the student will be asked to pause the lesson and do practice problems. It is very important that the student does all of the practice problems in the lesson.
Viewing the presentations – First you need to open the menu and then click on the unit that you wish to view and then on the lesson. The presentation should start automatically, if not, close the program and start again. It is necessary for the presentations to be viewed in full screen mode. To enable this, start the presentation and then, using the mouse, right-click and select Full Screen. To pause the lesson and take notes or do the practice problems, press the “s” key or, using the mouse, right-click and select Pause. To restart the lesson press the “s” key or, using the mouse, right-click and select Resume. The presentations will end automatically, if you view the entire lesson. To end the presentation, in the middle of the lesson, using the mouse, right-click and select End Lesson or press the “Esc” key. To return to the menu, end the presentation and then click on “Back.”
Text – Each Power Point® presentation is accompanied by an assignment. Some assignments may only be one page long, while others may be six or seven pages long. It is important that the student does the entire homework assignment.
Answer keys – Answer keys are provided for each assignment in the text.
Quizzes – At various points in the unit there is a quiz scheduled in the Unit Plan. These quizzes serve as a checkpoint for both teacher and student. Quizzes should be taken independently. It is important that the quiz is given to the student directly after finishing the indicated lessons. Answer keys are provided for each quiz.
Unit tests – Tests should be given for evaluation purposes at the conclusion of each unit. These tests, along with answer keys, are provided. You will also notice that the last assignment in each unit is a practice test. These practice tests closely mirror the final unit test and may be used as a pretest if so desired.
Comprehensive tests – There are semester final tests provided. The Semester 1 test is comprehensive and covers Units 1 – 5. The Semester 2 test is also comprehensive and covers Units 6 – 10. Two different tests (A and B) are included which are similar in format and would be appropriate for use as pretests, retake tests, or to have different tests to distribute during testing. Comprehensive Tests are found in the menu containing the Unit Tests.
Selected odd answers – The odd answers are provided for each assignment in each unit. These are for you as the teacher or administrator to use as you see fit. Often it is a good idea for the student to be able to self check his/her work to make sure he/she is on the right track. Odd answers are provided if you wish to use them.
* Unit 4 on factoring is quite lengthy. I have included an extra amount of problems to make sure the student has plenty of practice. Feel free to assign only even problems on some of the longer assignments.
BMA Algebra was created at Blue Mountain Academy in Monticello, Utah, for the (SJCJEC) San Juan County Jail Education Center, (Dennis Crane, Superintendent over Adult Education and Mark Bradford, Director of Education over the SJCJEC).
