February Safety Page, 2012
It's February again, (where does time go???)which means it's time once again to think about hearts. . . ours. I don't know if it is, or not, but February should be dubbed, National Heart Health Month. This year, when you're thinking about what to give to your favorite Valentine(s),think what a wonderful gift a healthier YOU would be! As my Valentine to each of you, I won't go on at length, with a lecture, but instead, here's a check list, which each of us can look at, and see how we "check out" in our life habits and routines. *** Eat Healthy, which includes eating the right kinds of foods, such as, (we all know this, right?) fruits and vegetables, whole grains, lean meats, (or better yet), fish. Avoid heavy carbs, too much sugar, and fatty foods. Avoid fried foods. Avoid eating out of boredom, for recreation, or to excess, for what ever reason. We all have triggers, which make us want to eat. Learn yours, and decide how you can improve your eating habits. *** Here's a no brainer, DON'T SMOKE. Smoking is an absolute disaster for your heart, and your lungs. (and very few people will want to kiss you if you smell and taste like an ash tray.) *** Exercise. Nope, no way around it, even if it means doing leg-lifts from your arm-chair, moving that body, improves the function and health of your heart. A good brisk walk is the best, and something most of us certainly can do. Many people enjoy a jog, or working out with your pals at the local gym. Even at work, you can find ways to move and challenge those sedentary parts to action! A few minutes a day beats nothing! *** Get plenty of rest. A good night's sleep makes all of our parts feel better. (and if you have exercised, you shouldn't have trouble sleeping!) *** Get regular medical check-ups. Even if you're feeling great, it's a good idea to let the "experts" check on your general physical well being. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure! *** Take care of your friends and family, and work on loving relationships. Think about it. When you're not happy, often you can experience stress, which is hard on your heart. To invest time in the relationships that really matter to us, is good for us, and the people we love! *** Here's a good one, LAUGH! Have you heard that old saying, laughter's the best medicine? Not just an old saying, it's actually true! Laughing is good for your heart. Laughing at mealtime, actually can reduce the surge in blood sugar levels! Seek out a funny friend to have lunch with! *** And in honor of Valentines Day, treat your self (and your loved ones) to DARK CHOCOLATE! Yes, dark chocolate contains an antioxidant that really is "heart healthy". *** For more information, contact your local medical community, or look on line for tips from the American Medical Association and other health oriented organizations.
