Announcement:
San Juan County Senior Centers are embarking on a “Walk Around the World Challenge” Each senior center is participating in a walking program that will encourage the participants to collectively walk as many steps as it would take to circumference the earth 49,800,000 steps. The program is set to kick off on August 10th 2009 and will be a year long program. Along the way each center has planned activities that will revolve around a destination point; when the set goal of certain steps walked has been met. For Example Blanding, Utah to New York City, NY would take 3,796,000 steps. Our goal is to educate and empower the aging population in our county to rise to the challenge of healthy lifestyles, provide an opportunity to battle chronic disease and help decrease the probability of costly fall injuries through a walking program. If you are interested in sponsoring a senior center you can pay the cost of $5 for the pedometer and donate your steps on a weekly basis to the center of your choice/or you could donate your steps to a different center each week. If you are interested in sponsoring a senior contact your local Senior Center Director and specify which senior you would like to sponsor. Each week you would then call in and report your steps to the Center Director.
