County Resource Management Plan

San Juan County is amending its general plan to add policy about land use and natural resource management in a Resource Management Plan.  A Resource Management Plan (RMP) is a component of the general or master plan each county is required to prepare to provide guidelines for the present and future needs of the county. The Utah State Legislature recently updated the state code regarding general plans (HB 323 and HB 219) and now requires every county to address natural resources on the public lands within a county in an RMP.

The RMP will be based on the needs and preferences of a county, its residents and property owners.  The plan will identify local knowledge and develop management objectives and policies related to natural resources.  It will be the County’s basic document for management of the public lands and the basis for communicating and coordinating with other land management agencies on land and resource management issues.

A draft Resource Management Plan has been prepared based on the needs and preferences of the County including comments submitted by the public during comment periods. The County Commission will hold a public hearing on the draft RMP during its regularly scheduled meeting June 20, 2017, beginning at 11AM in the Hideout Community Center, 49 West 600 South, Monticello (Hideout Golf Course). The public is encouraged to attend this hearing and make comments for the Commission to consider in finalizing the draft. The draft Plan is available online at sanjuancountyplan.org or a copy may be obtained in the County Clerk’s Office.  Questions about the draft plan or planning process may be directed to Nick Sandberg at nsandberg@sanjuancounty.org or 435-587-3223 ext. 4146.
